Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday unveiled three major Hindalco Industries Ltd projects worth about Rs 25,500 crore in the Lapanga area of Sambalpur district.
The chief minister laid the foundation stone for a Rs 21,000-crore expansion of Hindalco’s aluminium smelter, which will add 3.6 lakh tonnes per annum of capacity.
CM Majhi also inaugurated the commissioning of a flat rolled products (FRP) and battery-grade aluminium foil manufacturing facility with an annual capacity of 1.7 lakh tonnes, developed at an investment of Rs 4,500 crore.
At the event, Hindalco Managing Director Satish Pai announced fresh investments of Rs 50,000 crore in Odisha. Majhi called the day historic for Sambalpur and the Lapanga region, emphasising the area’s contribution to the state’s economic growth. He stressed that industrialisation would boost incomes, strengthen infrastructure and create opportunities for local youth.

Hindalco to Prioritise Hiring Local
Majhi highlighted the new battery foil unit’s role in bolstering India’s self-reliance in battery manufacturing and supporting the electric vehicle ecosystem. He also urged Hindalco to prioritise hiring local, industry-ready youth, and reaffirmed the government’s support for future expansion and transparent CSR implementation.
The chief minister recalled the Aditya Birla Group’s contributions to India’s industrial development and noted that industrial proposals worth nearly Rs 20 lakh crore are under consideration in Odisha. If realised, these could create employment for over 15 lakh youth.
He also said Sambalpur would soon get the state’s second World Skill Centre after Bhubaneswar to further improve youth employability.
Speaking at the function, Satish Pai said Odisha has become central to Hindalco’s growth, adding that the upcoming expansion, including greenfield and brownfield alumina projects and smelting capacity additions, would create about 15,000 new jobs.
Pai noted that Hindalco has already invested over Rs 40,000 crore in the state, providing jobs for more than 28,000 people. He also mentioned plans to add 300 MW of renewable energy capacity to cut carbon emissions by nearly 30% and noted that the company supplies aluminium to global firms including Boeing and Mitsubishi.
