Barabati Stadium in Cuttack will debut a red-soil wicket for the upcoming India–South Africa T20 International on December 9, following an inspection by BCCI East Zone chief pitch curator Ashish Bhowmick on Wednesday.
According to The Times of India report, the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) had prepared two tracks, one made from red soil sourced from Maharashtra and another from traditional black soil brought from Kalahandi.
What to Expect from the Red-Soil Pitch?
After evaluating both surfaces, Bhowmick approved the red-soil pitch, noting that it promises a livelier contest with better pace, bounce and carry, especially under lights and in winter conditions.
This marks the first instance of a red-soil surface being used at Barabati Stadium, which has predominantly relied on black-soil wickets over the years. Officials believe the switch could bring a fresh competitive dimension to matches hosted at the venue.
During his assessment, the BCCI curator examined the pitch’s hardness, moisture retention, and expected behaviour over the course of the match. He also reviewed the outfield, which he reportedly found suitable for a fast-paced T20 game.
OCA secretary Sanjay Behera said the decision aligns with the association’s objective of offering a world-class playing environment.
Meanwhile, ticket sales for affiliated units and district sports associations commenced at the OCA office on Wednesday, as preparations shift into match mode ahead of the marquee event.
Barabati Stadium will host the opening match of the five-game T20I series between India and South Africa, with subsequent fixtures scheduled in Mullanpur, Dharamsala, Lucknow and Ahmedabad on December 11, 14, 17 and 19.
