The historic and centuries-old Chhatar Yatra of Maa Manikeswari began in Bhawanipatna of Kalahandi district this morning under an extensive security cover.
Anticipating the arrival of lakhs of devotees, the district administration deployed 13 platoons of police across the town. Sources also reported that traffic was being regulated at 25 junctions, and 35 CCTV cameras have been installed to monitor the three-kilometre route from Jenakhala to the temple.
Procession Begins At Dawn
The yatra began at 5:15 am after sacred rituals were performed at Jenakhala. The deity’s ceremonial ‘chhatar’ then proceeded towards the temple, accompanied by large crowds of devotees.
Along the route, worshippers offered incense, lamps, and naivedya, while thousands of pigeons were released in keeping with tradition. The ceremonial umbrella carrying Maa Manikeswari’s presence is scheduled to reach the temple by 11:40 am.

Rituals And Participation
The festival also witnessed animal sacrifices by devotees, a long-standing practice associated with the event.
Meanwhile, cultural groups have added to the proceedings with performances by 22 troupes, including traditional Ghumura dance and music using Jena and Veera instruments. The route from Jenakhala to the temple turned crimson with sacrificial rituals carried out by worshippers, said reports.
Crowd Management Challenges
Authorities confirmed that the gathering stretched over the entire yatra route, with lakhs of devotees taking part.
To prevent congestion, police set up diversions, managed intersections, and maintained constant surveillance through control rooms connected to CCTV feeds. Officials said the arrangements were designed to ensure smooth conduct of the centuries-old festival, considered one of western Odisha’s largest religious congregations.
