Odisha school students develop low-cost life-saving app to prevent road accidents

In an inspiring display of innovation, four students from Budhikomna Panchayat High School in Odisha’s Nuapada district have developed a life-saving mobile application aimed at reducing road accidents and protecting lives. 

The student innovators were driven by the increasing number of fatalities caused by road mishaps across the State and wanted to create an affordable safety solution for the public.

The newly developed mobile app alerts drivers whenever their vehicle approaches an accident-prone zone. Once installed in a vehicle, the app functions automatically, issuing timely warnings to prevent collisions and help drivers remain alert on risky routes. 

According to sources, the mechanism has been designed to operate seamlessly without requiring constant manual input, making it suitable for both rural and urban users.

Speaking about the project, young innovator Sai Swarup Panda said the primary objective was to build a cost-effective safety tool accessible to ordinary families.

“This will save many people by helping prevent accidents. In cases of absent-mindedness, it will alert the driver. Most importantly, it is very affordable. Usually, cars with technologies like this cost around 7–8 lakh rupees, which is unaffordable for middle-class families. So, we invented this to make it accessible for everyone,” he explained.

Teachers and locals have praised the students for their creativity and social awareness. The app is expected to undergo further refinement before being introduced to the broader public, and authorities believe it has the potential to become a valuable tool in enhancing road safety across Odisha.
