Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) officially announced the names of Manmohan Samal and Sujeet Kumar as its candidates from Odisha on Tuesday. The declaration was made by the party’s central committee, finalising their candidature for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.

Following the announcement, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi congratulated Manmohan Samal.
The announcement is seen as a strategic move by the BJP as it gears up for a crucial political contest. Central party leaders expressed confidence in both candidates, highlighting their experience and organisational strength.
With the central leadership clearing their names, preparations at the grassroots level are expected to gain momentum. Political observers believe the decision will intensify electoral dynamics in the region as rival parties begin recalibrating their strategies.
Worth mentioning, the contest for the fourth seat in the Rajya Sabha from Odisha has intensified after the opposition Congress extended support on Monday to the common candidate Dr. Datteshwar Hota.
The move has triggered sharp political positioning between the ruling BJP and opposition camps – BJD and Congress. The BJP has announced plans to field three candidates for the Rajya Sabha election and has stirred speculation by purchasing 16 nomination sets.
All three candidates are expected to file their nominations on March 5, with the party MLAs instructed to remain present during the filing process. Signatures of the legislators have already been secured on nomination papers.
At a key meeting convened by the Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi yesterday, the party discussed its electoral strategy and next course of action.
Besides, the BJP has criticised both the BJD and Congress, stating that the opposition’s approach does not reflect healthy democratic tradition and that broader consultation among political parties should have taken place.
Responding to the BJP’s criticism, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) clarified that Dr. Hota is a joint candidate supported by both BJD and the Congress, not exclusively its nominee. The party also questioned the BJP’s remarks, urging it to support the candidate if it truly respects the medical fraternity.
