The contest for the fourth seat in the Rajya Sabha from Odisha intensified after the opposition Congress extended support on Monday to the common candidate Dr. Datteshwar Hota.

The move has triggered sharp political positioning between the ruling BJP and opposition camps – BJD and Congress. The BJP has announced plans to field three candidates for the Rajya Sabha election and has stirred speculation by purchasing 16 nomination sets.
All three candidates are expected to file their nominations on March 5, with the party MLAs instructed to remain present during the filing process. Signatures of legislators have already been secured on nomination papers.
At a key meeting convened by the Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi today, the party discussed its electoral strategy and next course of action.
Meanwhile, the BJP has criticised both the BJD and Congress, stating that the Opposition’s approach does not reflect healthy democratic tradition and that broader consultation among political parties should have taken place.
On the other hand, Dr. Hota met senior Congress leaders and MLAs at a private hotel in Bhubaneswar to seek support.
Responding to the BJP’s criticism, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) clarified that Dr. Hota is a joint candidate supported by both BJD and Congress, not exclusively its nominee. The party also questioned the BJP’s remarks, urging it to support the candidate if it truly respects the medical fraternity.
“The announcements and stance of the Opposition Congress and the BJD are not a healthy tradition for democracy. To maintain a healthy democratic tradition, the Opposition parties should have consulted and discussed with all political parties,” senior BJP leader Sudipta Ray said.
“If my party decided to support a non-Congress and a non-BJP candidate, it would be a welcome move. Why should there be any objection?” BJD’s Ganeswar Behera expressed.
“He (Dr. Datteshwar Hota) is standing as a common candidate from both our parties, which is why he made an appeal to us. Our In-charge has been informed. He will communicate the message regarding his presence at today’s meeting,” Odisha PCC chief Bhakta Das stated.
