Odisha govt mulls new 4-lane Rasulgarh-Raghunathpur expressway in Bhubaneswar

In a bid to ease the growing traffic congestion in Bhubaneswar, the Odisha government is considering the construction of a new four-lane expressway connecting Rasulgarh to Raghunathpur, forming a high-speed corridor through the state capital’s northern stretch.

The proposed expressway will serve as an alternative route to the congested Jayadev Vihar–Nandankanan road, improving mobility between key residential and institutional areas such as Patia, Chandaka, and Infocity, reported The Times of India.

Route To Run Parallel To Chandaka-Patia

Once completed, the expressway is expected to reduce travel time by up to 40 percent and divert a significant portion of vehicular flow away from the city’s core areas.

Reports also added that the Odisha Bridge and Construction Corporation (OBCC) has been directed to conduct a feasibility study and prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the corridor. The study will include alignment options, traffic forecasts, land and environmental assessments, and a 30-year traffic volume projection.

Notably, the Rasulgarh–Raghunathpur corridor is expected to run parallel to the Chandaka–Patia belt, linking NH-16 with developing zones near Raghunathpur and providing improved access to IT hubs, educational institutions, and upcoming residential clusters.

Bridge To Ease Cuttack–Bhubaneswar Congestion

In a related development, the OBCC has also floated bids for constructing a new four-lane bridge over the Kathajodi river, parallel to the existing Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Setu, to further decongest the busy Cuttack–Bhubaneswar route.

The upcoming bridge, spanning around 3.1 km including approach roads, will connect Trisulia and the Judicial Academy area, easing pressure on the existing structure, which has been operating beyond capacity due to rapid urbanisation and increased vehicle density since its commissioning in 2017.
