Odisha govt invites proposals for formation of new districts

Responding to a query in the House, the Minister stated that the government is open to examining proposals for the creation of new districts if submitted.

The Odisha government has invited proposals for the formation of new districts during the 2026–27 financial year, Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari informed the State Legislative Assembly in a written reply on Thursday.

Responding to a query in the House, the Minister stated that the government is open to examining proposals for the creation of new districts if submitted. 

He clarified that any proposal received will be reviewed in accordance with established administrative norms and feasibility criteria before a decision is taken.

According to the written reply, the state government has already received memoranda demanding the formation of 31 new districts from various regions across the state. These demands have been formally submitted to the authorities and are currently under consideration.

However, the Minister did not indicate a specific timeline for the approval or implementation of any new district formation.

The issue of creating new districts has gained momentum in recent years, with several regions arguing that smaller administrative units would ensure better governance, faster implementation of welfare schemes, improved law-and-order management, and enhanced access to public services.

The Minister reiterated that the government will take a decision at an appropriate time after examining all relevant aspects, including administrative convenience, financial implications and public interest.
