Rashmi Ranjan Das, Deputy Superintendent of Police posted in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district, unexpectedly found himself at the centre of online chatter after photographs highlighting his naturally reddish hair began circulating widely. The unusual look triggered memes, jokes and criticism, with many questioning whether such an appearance suited a uniformed officer.

The viral attention soon reached senior officials, prompting internal queries and a verbal advisory.
Officer Clarifies it’s Not a Style Statement!
Addressing the controversy, Das clarified that the colour was not the result of fashion or experimentation. Speaking to Times of India, he said, “I don’t apply red dye or any colour to my hair. My hair started turning reddish several years ago due to medical and hormonal issues."
However, he chose not to elaborate on the specific medical condition or treatment.
Department Unaware of Medical History
Police officials admitted they were initially unaware of the health-related reason behind the change in hair colour.
Explaining the situation, a senior officer said, “When we issued him a verbal warning and inquired as to why he changed his hair colour, he disclosed his medical issues,” confirming that the matter was clarified only after discussion.
No Strict Rules on Appearance
Interestingly, the department’s rulebook does not mandate standards regarding hair colour. Authorities noted that personal grooming choices vary widely among personnel.
Highlighting this flexibility, the officer added, “Many officers flaunt long and big moustaches. It is about personal choice and is a subjective matter,” suggesting that appearance is largely individual.

From Controversy to Clarity
Before the explanation surfaced, senior officers had advised Das to darken his hair to avoid public criticism. With the medical clarification now on record, what began as an online spectacle has turned into a reminder about assumptions and personal circumstances.
