At least 10 temples were looted between October 2023 and March 2024 in Odisha. And, again around 10 temples were looted in the first six months (between January and June 2025) in the state. With the onset of winter this year, on November 28, another temple theft was reported in the famous Maa Churchika shrine in Jagatsinghpur.
This worrying rise in temple thefts in recent months, with incidents reported across multiple districts, suggesting what appears to be an emerging pattern. From village shrines to centuries-old temples, burglars have repeatedly targeted donation boxes, ornaments, and idols, often using similar methods such as night-time break-ins and lock-breaking.
The frequency and manner of these thefts have raised concerns among devotees and authorities, prompting fears that organised groups may be systematically exploiting security gaps at religious sites across the state.
Is It A Pattern? Here's What Retired Police Official BK Sharma Says
BK Sharma, a senior retired Police Official said, “While the rise in temple thefts may not indicate a seasonal 'winter pattern', the longer nights and deeper sleep during colder months certainly offer thieves an advantage.”
According to Sharma, the core issue, however, lies in the absence of adequate security measures. Many temples operate under the complacent belief that divine protection alone will deter wrongdoing, but in reality, temples need robust, modern safeguards, he said.
What Needs To Be Done To Prevent Thefts At Temples?
According to Sharma, CCTV surveillance and trained guards must be made mandatory, and deities or valuables should be secured with digital locking systems.
“Police are already aware of the limited number of habitual offenders involved in such crimes; those previously arrested or under suspicion should be kept under strict monitoring and surveillance to prevent repeat offences,” he added.
