A life was narrowly saved from the deep waters of the River Mahanadi in an astonishing and almost unbelievable manner. A young woman survived after clinging to the spire of a partially submerged temple amid the vast reservoir of Hirakud Dam, turning what could have been a tragedy into a miraculous escape.

According to sources, the fatal incident occurred on Thursday near the Rampela bridge, which connects Jharsuguda and Sambalpur. The woman accidentally slipped from the bridge and fell into the deep waters of the reservoir.
Struggling for survival and crying for help, she suddenly noticed the tip of a temple structure rising above the water. Without wasting time, she swam towards it and held on tightly to the temple spire with both hands.
The temple, which had remained submerged for a long time due to rising water levels, became her only support. She stood clinging to it for a prolonged period until Banharpali police and local fishermen reached the spot and rescued her using a boat.
The woman has been identified as Sabitri Meher from Itabhata of Brajarajnagar. After the rescue, she was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors confirmed that her condition is stable. Locals termed the incident a divine intervention, saying, “If God protects someone, who else can harm?”
However, no comments were received from the police or the woman in this regard.
