A major fire broke out at the municipal fruit market near the District Collector’s office in Bolangir on Monday, reducing more than 50 fruit shops to ashes. Witnesses described the blaze as intense, with flames engulfing shop after shop in the bustling marketplace. The incident has caused widespread panic among local traders and residents who rushed out in shock as the fire spread rapidly.

Shops Turn to Ashes in Minutes

Around 80 fruit shops stood in the market, of which approximately 60 have been completely destroyed. Traders reported that fruits worth lakhs were lost in the devastating blaze. Many stalls, stocked with seasonal produce, were left charred and unrecognisable. According to eyewitnesses, the entire area resembled a burning heap within minutes.

Fire Services Rush to Control the Flames

Fire Services teams reached the spot promptly and began efforts to control the fire. Firefighters were working continuously to douse the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures. However, the actual cause of the fire was not immediately known, prompting concerns among shopkeepers about safety and infrastructure.

“Nothing concrete has emerged so far. After a thorough investigation, we will determine exactly how the fire occurred. The cause of the blaze will be established once the inquiry is complete,” said the Bolangir SDPO.

Panic Among Locals

Locals who witnessed the horrific scene expressed fear as thick smoke and flames covered the market area. The incident has left many traders devastated, with their livelihoods turned to ashes overnight.

As authorities investigate the cause of the fire, affected shopkeepers await relief and support to rebuild their damaged businesses. The incident has raised pressing questions about fire safety measures in busy commercial zones.
