Man sets house on fire to kill wife! Lucky woman escapes death, house reduced to ashes

In a scene out of a Bollywood movie, a woman narrowly escaped death after her husband allegedly set her house on fire in an attempt to kill her. While the woman survived, the house was completely gutted, reducing all belongings to ashes.

The bone-chilling incident has been reported from Kuagothana village under Goudgaon in the Kaptipada police station limits of Odisha's Mayurbhanj district.

According to allegations, the accused husband deliberately set the house on fire as part of a premeditated plan to kill his wife. The victim, Shraddhanjali Barik of the Baunshapal area under Udala police station limits, had been living separately from her husband, Mrutyunjay Barik, for a long time due to marital disputes.

Fortunately, Shradhanjali had gone to her parental home to attend a family ritual and survived. Later, her neighbours informed her about the fire in her house. Upon inspection, she found the bedroom window broken, petrol poured inside, and the house deliberately set ablaze.

“My uncle expired, so I had to go to attend his 10th day-death ceremony. Later, my neighbours here called my brother and informed him that my house was on fire. We rushed here, and someone had called the fire team. I had kept cash that had been burnt. My tailor machine, which helped me earn a livelihood, has also been burnt along with Godrej, utensils, and many other household items,” alleged Shradhanjali.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident to ascertain the exact sequence of events and verify the allegations. Further action will be taken based on the outcome of the probe.
