In a significant development, the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal on Monday issued an important directive regarding the long-standing differences between Odisha and Chhattisgarh over the sharing of the river water and related projects.
As per reports, the tribunal has advised the state of Chhattisgarh to constitute an inter-ministerial committee.
During the hearing, Advocate General Pitambar Acharya informed the tribunal that Odisha has already formed an inter-ministerial committee to deal with issues related to the dispute.
After taking note of this submission, the tribunal suggested that Chhattisgarh should also set up a similar committee to facilitate discussions and coordination on the matter.

It was also informed that the tenure of the tribunal is scheduled to end in April 2026. In view of this, there has been a consensus on extending the tribunal’s tenure so that the proceedings and resolution process can continue without interruption.
The tribunal has fixed February 7 as the date for the next hearing in the case.
The Mahanadi dispute centres on Odisha’s allegations of reduced downstream flow due to upstream interventions by Chhattisgarh, with both states presenting technical assessments, hydrological data and compliance documentation before the tribunal.
