A significant hearing was conducted on Saturday by the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal, which has been addressing the long-standing differences between Odisha and Chhattisgarh over the sharing of Mahanadi river waters and related projects.
During the proceedings, Advocate General of Odisha, Pitambar Acharya, apprised the tribunal that both states are actively working towards a resolution of the dispute.
The tribunal was informed that a high-level meeting between the top leadership of Odisha and Chhattisgarh has been scheduled for October 28. The meeting is expected to focus on crucial issues, including water allocation between the two states and approvals for ongoing and upcoming projects.

Sources confirmed that both states have reached a consensus to advance the IB project and the Lower Suktel water project, which were earlier pending clearance from the Central Water Commission (CWC). This mutual agreement marks a significant step in reducing tensions and ensuring progress on key irrigation and water management initiatives.
The tribunal also emphasised that both states’ cooperation is crucial for equitable water sharing and the successful implementation of pending projects. With the recent developments, there is cautious optimism that longstanding conflicts over the Mahanadi waters may move towards a practical resolution.
The next hearing has been scheduled for November 15, during which further progress on water allocation, project approvals, and timelines for implementation will be reviewed. Both Odisha and Chhattisgarh have expressed their commitment to continue constructive dialogue in the tribunal.
