A major accident unfolded in Barkote of Deogarh district when a gas cylinder kept in front of a house exploded late last night, causing extensive property damage. The blast tore off the plaster from the walls, blew away the asbestos roof, and triggered a fire that completely destroyed a car and a bike parked under the portico, sources said on Tuesday.

According to sources, the incident occurred at the residence of Amulya Nath, located behind Barkote hospital. The family members, who were asleep inside their house at that time, narrowly escaped unharmed. An LPG cylinder kept under the portico somehow caught fire and exploded. However, the exact cause of the ignition remains unclear.
The explosion created a loud noise that alerted neighbours, who rushed to the spot to help the family. Firefighters from Barkote arrived quickly and managed to bring the fire under control. Although there were no casualties, the property loss is said to be significant.
Authorities are investigating the incident to determine how the fire started and whether there were any safety lapses in storing the LPG cylinder at home.
No comments were received from the local police in this regard.
Worth mentioning, earlier in another incident, a devastating fire had broken out in Nuasahi village of Khallikote in Ganjam district, after a battery-operated scooter had caught fire on October 15 this year while being charged at home.
The fire had quickly escalated when a nearby LPG cylinder exploded, triggering a loud blast and setting a three-storey house ablaze.
The incident had occurred at the residence of Ajit Mohanty, where the scooter was plugged in for charging. Within moments, the flames had spread, and the explosion caused panic in the neighbourhood.
