A devastating fire broke out in Nuasahi village of Khallikote, Ganjam district, after a battery-operated scooter caught fire on Wednesday while being charged at home. The fire quickly escalated when a nearby LPG cylinder exploded, triggering a loud blast and setting a three-storey house ablaze.

The incident occurred at the residence of Ajit Mohanty, where the scooter was plugged in for charging. Within moments, the flames spread, and the explosion caused panic in the neighbourhood.
Fire services arrived swiftly and managed to bring the blaze under control. In a tense rescue operation, 11 people trapped inside the building were pulled out safely, preventing any casualties.
However, the inferno reduced household items like TVs, a sewing machine, and other valuable belongings to ashes. The scale of the damage has left locals shaken and raised serious concerns over fire safety during EV charging in residential areas.
An investigation is underway to confirm the exact cause, while officials urge people to follow charging safety protocols and maintain distance from flammable objects.
No comments were received from local police or the affected family in this regard.
Worth mentioning, earlier in another incident, an LPG cylinder explosion at Kulada village under Nalco police limits in Angul district had left three members of a family critically injured on August 10 this year.
The fatal incident had occurred at around 2.00 AM, at the residence of Bibhuti Bhushan Pradhan. The explosion had caused a fire that engulfed the entire house.
The blast had woken nearby residents, who rushed out and found Pradhan’s house on fire. Neighbours discovered that Bibhuti, his wife Ratnamanjari, and their lone son Vignesh were trapped inside. They had attempted to douse the flames and informed Nalco police.
