Low-pressure, then depression likely around Sep 26; rain alert in Odisha

An upper air cyclonic circulation has already formed over the coastal areas of central Myanmar and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal, setting the stage for intensified weather activity.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the development of a fresh low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which likely to bring widespread rainfall to Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal. An upper air cyclonic circulation has already formed over the coastal areas of central Myanmar and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal, setting the stage for intensified weather activity.

System to Intensify Further

According to the IMD, the system is expected to move westwards and develop into a low-pressure area by September 25 over the north and adjoining central Bay of Bengal. It is likely to strengthen into a depression by September 26, positioned over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay, off the coasts of South Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh by September 27.

Warning for Fishermen

The IMD has cautioned fishermen not to venture into the sea along and off Odisha coasts and the north Bay of Bengal between 24–28 September, as rough weather and strong surface winds are anticipated.

Rainfall Warnings

For tomorrow, an Orange Warning has been issued for Koraput, Nabarangpur and Nuapada districts, while a Yellow Warning has been issued for Malkangiri, Kandhamal, Kalahandi and Rayagada. Similarly, Ganjam, Gajapati and Balasore districts have also been placed under a Yellow Warning. The Meteorological Centre has cautioned that these districts could experience heavy to very heavy rainfall. Rain is also expected over the coastal, western and interior parts of Odisha.
