Low pressure to trigger heavy rainfall in Odisha, IMD issues orange, yellow warnings for several districts

Several parts in Odisha are expected to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall activities under the influence of a fresh low-pressure system, which has formed over the northeast Bay of Bengal and its adjoining areas, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted on Tuesday.

As per the IMD, another fresh low-pressure area is likely to form over the east-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around 25 September. Moving west-northwestwards, it is very likely to become a depression over the northwest & adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal off the South Odisha- North Andhra Pradesh coasts around 26 September.

Under the influence of the systems, widespread rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is expected across the state from Tuesday, with the system likely to persist till September 28.

According to the IMD, several districts will experience intense rainfall activity over the next few days. Sundargarh and Sambalpur have been placed under an Orange Warning for today, as these areas are likely to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall.

In addition, 11 districts have been put on Yellow Alert, where thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate to heavy showers are expected. The weather office have cautioned that gusty surface winds with speeds reaching 30-40 kmph may accompany the downpour.
