Tension gripped Komna town in Nuapada district late Friday night after gunfire was reported near the Old Block Chhak area, just days ahead of the upcoming by-election in the constituency.

According to local sources, a scuffle broke out between the Personal Security Officer (PSO) of the Koraput MLA and a group of youths, leading to chaos in the area.

Eyewitnesses said that the MLA’s PSO was present at Komna Old Block Chhak along with an acquaintance when a few youths broke out in an altercation with him.

As tempers flared and the situation turned volatile, the PSO allegedly fired a blank round into the air to control the crowd. The sudden gunfire created panic among the locals, with several shopkeepers closing their establishments in fear.

Soon after the incident, Komna Police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. A detailed investigation has been launched, and a case has been registered against the MLA’s PSO in connection with the firing.

Police officials said they are verifying the exact circumstances that led to the clash and whether the firearm was used in self-defence. The incident has sparked political debate in the region, coming at a sensitive time ahead of the Nuapada by-election.
