As Odisha braces for the possible impact of Cyclone ‘Montha’, authorities have begun identifying and assessing cyclone shelters across vulnerable coastal areas. However, an on-ground reality check by OTV in Balasore district has revealed the poor condition of several designated safe shelters.

Residents expressed deep concern over the lack of maintenance and preparedness at these facilities. “Fear will always be there about how we’ll stay here in darkness if a cyclone strikes. The premises are filthy, and people can’t even sit on the floor. Why should anyone come here in such conditions?” questioned Birendra Mahalik, a local resident.

According to reports, funds were allocated nearly four months ago for the repair and maintenance of cyclone shelters, but very little work appears to have been completed. “We don’t feel safe here. There is no drinking water, no power supply, and no fans. Despite red alerts, the situation is grim. We live nearby, so we’ll be forced to stay here,” said Sanyasi Mahalik, another resident.

Meanwhile, district authorities have started inspecting existing shelters and preparing contingency plans. Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas have been advised to remain alert and aware of their nearest cyclone relief centres.

Preparedness efforts are ongoing, with emergency services and disaster response teams coordinating to minimise risks if the cyclone intensifies. Officials have stressed the need for early evacuation, better infrastructure, and community awareness to ensure public safety.

Worth mentioning, India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed Odisha on alert as the Deep Depression over Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm within next 24 hours and further intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by October 28.
