A minor student died after accidentally swallowing a notice board pin at his school in the Dhobatota area of Phulbani. The deceased was identified as Tushar Mishra, a Class 7 student of Daringbadi in Kandhamal district.
The incident, which occurred on October 15, has triggered allegations of gross negligence from the minor’s family against the school authorities for failing to act promptly, even after the boy informed his teachers.
According to reports, Tushar, who was staying at his maternal uncle’s home in Phulbani and studying at Adarsha Vidyalaya in Dhovatota, accidentally swallowed a pin used on the school notice board around 11 am during school hours.
Reports stated that the boy informed his class teacher and other staff members immediately after the accidental consumption, but allegedly, no urgent action was taken.
Family members alleged that the teachers dismissed the matter lightly, asking him to drink water and continue attending classes. Tushar was not sent home or taken for medical examination despite complaining of discomfort, claimed his parents.
Treated At Multiple Hospitals Before Shifting To Cuttack
Sources informed that after returning home when school closed, Tushar informed his mother about the incident. Alarmed, the family rushed him to Phulbani District Headquarters Hospital and later to Berhampur MKCG, but his condition continued to worsen.
Doctors there referred him to Cuttack Sishu Bhavan, where specialists detected the pin lodged in his lungs.
Doctors at Sishu Bhavan successfully removed the pin through a delicate procedure, but Tushar’s lungs had already been severely affected. He was kept in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for ten days before he succumbed on October 26.

Parents Blame School For Delay And Negligence
The deceased boy’s parents have held the school entirely responsible for their son’s death. They allege that even after Tushar told teachers about swallowing the pin, no medical help or parental communication was arranged.
"The teacher asked him to swallow rice and drink water. However, because of the pin, the food and water went inside the lungs instead of the food pipe," said Tatini Mishra, Tushar’s mother.
The family further claimed that the school authorities never visited their home or expressed condolences after the child’s death. They have demanded a probe and accountability for the delay in providing medical attention.
Meanwhile, police from Phulbani have registered an unnatural death case and are verifying the sequence of events based on family statements and medical records. The exact timeline of the delay and the role of the teaching staff are expected to form part of the official inquiry.
As of the last reports, sources said the district education office is awaiting a detailed report from Adarsha Vidyalaya’s headmaster. The school has so far not commented publicly on the allegations of negligence.
