The Bhubaneswar International Airport (BPIA) achieved a significant milestone by recording its highest-ever annual passenger traffic, marking a major boost to Odisha’s aviation sector.
According to official data, more than 50 lakh (5 million) passengers travelled through the Bhubaneswar airport in 2025, the highest number recorded in a single year since the airport began operations.
13th Busiest Airport In Country
This remarkable growth has propelled Bhubaneswar International Airport to the 13th position among the busiest airports in the country in terms of passenger movement. The rise reflects the increasing demand for air travel from the state capital, driven by economic growth, improved connectivity, and a steady rise in tourism, business travel, and official movement.
The data also highlights the contrast with India’s busiest airport, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, which topped the list with a massive 7 crore (70 million) passengers during the same period. While Delhi continues to dominate national air traffic, Bhubaneswar’s consistent upward trajectory has drawn attention at the national level.

At present, Bhubaneswar Airport offers flight connectivity to 28 domestic and international destinations, strengthening its role as a key aviation hub in eastern India. Several airlines operate regular services from the airport, connecting Odisha with major metropolitan cities as well as important regional centers.
Matter Of Pride For Odisha
“This is the first time in Bhubaneswar's history that we have achieved 5 million passengers. To be exact, there was a footfall of 5.15 million passengers in 2025. We are the 13th largest airport in passenger handling in the country. Earlier, there were 30 destinations; now we have 28 destinations,” informed Prassana Pradhan, Director, Bhubaneswar Airport.
The achievement is being seen as a matter of pride for Odisha, underlining Bhubaneswar’s growing importance on India’s aviation map.
