The alleged rape and murder of a minor girl in Chandbali of Bhadrak district has triggered sharp political reactions, with the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Congress jointly calling for a Chandbali bandh on Thursday, even as Chief Minister Mohan Majhi announced a financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh for the victim’s family.

Sources reported that the bandh will be observed from 6 am to 12 noon, and will demand justice for the victim and swift action in the case.

As of this morning, normal life in Chandbali was disrupted during the shutdown, with shops remaining closed and vehicular movement affected in several areas. Protesters staged demonstrations at College Square, where incidents of burning were reported as part of the agitation.

Accused Arrested, House Vandalised

Amid public outrage following the incident, angry locals reportedly vandalised the house of the prime accused. The accused was later arrested from Jagatsinghpur district, confirmed the Eastern Range Deputy Inspector General of Police, adding that the investigation into the case is currently underway.

Police officials have stated that all aspects of the crime are being examined and further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.

CM Announces Compensation For Victim’s Family

In response to the incident, the Chief Minister announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the victim’s family.

Meanwhile, members of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights visited Chandbali and met the victim’s family. Commission member Manasmita Khuntia, along with the District Child Protection Officer, interacted with the family members and assured them of necessary support within the framework of the law.

The team also visited Chandbali police station, where discussions were held with the Superintendent of Police and local police officials regarding the progress of the rape and murder investigation.

As per reports, the minor girl had gone missing and was later found in an injured condition near a bridge in the Chandbali area. She was immediately shifted to the Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital for treatment, where doctors were monitoring her condition.

Police have earlier detained a youth in connection with the incident and said the victim’s statement would be recorded once her health condition permitted.
