Bhadrak Bhandaripokhari Panchayat Samiti Chairperson Sumati Sethi from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has alleged that her decision to apply for membership in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) triggered intimidation, an attack on her home, and threats to her life.
Sethi’s complaint police states that the pressure began soon after she submitted the joining request. Sethi claimed that after she filed a formal application to join the BJP, certain individuals linked to the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) allegedly began insisting that she remain with the ruling party.
The complaint did not mention names, but claimed that multiple local functionaries tried to force her to withdraw her request during the past two days.
Notably, the issue has surfaced at a time when several grassroots leaders in the Bhadrak district have reportedly been considering switching to the BJP. The complaint states that such a political movement has intensified local tension and added to the pressure placed on her.
Home Allegedly Attacked With Stones
Sethi’s complaint states that her refusal to withdraw her application led to an escalation of intimidation on Sunday night.
Unidentified individuals allegedly arrived at her residence, hurled stones at the property, and hurled caste-based remarks during the incident. The complaint also states that a threat was issued that she would be killed if she left the BJD and formally joined the BJP.
Sethi has since sought police protection for herself and her family, warning that the threat to her life must be treated seriously.
