The Special Crime Unit arrested key drug peddler Sheikh Akbar during a recent anti-narcotics operation in the capital city Bhubaneswar, during which officials seized 400 grams of brown sugar worth Rs 40 lakh. The raid was carried out in Bhubaneswar based on specific intelligence inputs, revealing Akbar’s involvement in an illegal narcotics network. Akbar, a resident of Sahadev Khunta in Balasore district, was apprehended at the spot, while his associate managed to escape during the operation. The action was initiated to dismantle an emerging drug supply chain and prevent further expansion of the racket.
Blueprint of Drug Trade Exposed
According to officials, the narcotics syndicate had been preparing a detailed blueprint to expand the circulation of brown sugar across Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. Before the plan could materialise, the Special Crime Unit intercepted the racket through swift, intelligence-led action. Police stated that Akbar had allegedly been coordinating supply routes and distribution channels to strengthen the syndicate’s presence in the region.

Key Associate on the Run
Another partner in the racket, Sheikh Sadiq, managed to escape during the raid. Police teams have begun an extensive search to trace him, scanning possible hideouts and gathering inputs from local sources. Officials believe Sadiq played a crucial role in the logistics of the drug network.
The seizure, officers said, highlights the extent of the narcotics supply chain that had been silently developing within the city.
"The Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissionerate Police special crime unit has seized 400 gm brown sugar and has arrested Sheikh Akbar, who is an important supplier. He is a resident of the Balasore area. We are trying to find to link and find the second accused," said Suresh Dev Datta Singh, Twin City Police Commissioner.
Police Commissioner Vows Tougher Action
He emphasised that the administration is working towards strengthening punitive measures and widening the legal framework to dismantle organised narcotics networks more effectively.
