Bhubaneswar: An Odia IAS officer engaged as Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) in Birbhum district of West Bengal, Smrutiranjan Mohanty has brought harassment, illegal confinement and insubordination charges against the SDPO of Rampurhat Police Station.
In a letter to West Bengal Chief Secretary and Home Secretary, Mohanty has sought justice for the humiliation, assault, harassment and illegal confinement he faced for performing his duty in public interest.
Sources said Mohanty along with RK Halder, the deputy collector and deputy magistrate of Rampurhat had went to Rampurhat police station after getting complaints regarding extortion and corruption in the sub-division.
"The allegations were brought by Crusher Owners' Association and anticipating that these issues can create public disturbances in the form of massive law and order, I contacted the inspector-in-charge of Rampurhat several times over phone to pass on the instructions. But failed to establish any communication," said Tripathy in his letter.
Mohanty further wrote that later he along with Halder visited the police station for discussing the matter with the IIC but was subjected to hostile behaviour which was ‘premeditated.’

“Rampurhat SDPO arrived at the police station and started talking to me in high voices, contesting my locus standi and authority to be present in the police station.
The SDPO and local police locked the doors and refused to let me leave,” Mohanty alleged.
In his letter, Mohanty informed that he was allowed to leave the police station after the intervention of the District Magistrate of Birbhum. However, the mobile phone of deputy magistrate and deputy collector was also seized.
