Angul: An auto-rickshaw plunged several feet underground after floodwater washed away a road in the district today.

Two persons including a trader travelling in the vehicle were however safely rescued from the trapped auto.

As per sources, heavy rainfall under the influence of low pressure on Bay of Bengal over the past few days caused a steady rise in water level in Brahmani river flowing along the dictrict.

Today morning, a bridge on Kisinda jhor (Tributary)  of the river situated near Kisinda area under Chhendipada block of the district caved in suddenly under the impact of heavy flow of water making people scamper to safety.

An auto-rickshaw which was travelling on the bridge fell into the large crater. Fortunately the two occupants of the vehicle escaped from being washed away in the strong current of the river and were immediately rescued by locals.

A crane was also roped in to pull out the auto-rickshaw from the collapsed site. Following the incident, road communication has come to a standstill in the area.

Meanwhile, flood situation has brought the life to a standstill in Rengali block with acute waterlogging in several villages like Rengali, Kuluma, Gadhahati sahi. Acres of farmland in the region have been submerged after surge in water level in Brahmani. Various roads in Athamallick and Kishore Nagar were also submerged by floodwaters.
