All the information shared by citizens on the WhatsApp number will be kept confidential and appropriate action will be taken on their grievances, said Bhubaneswar DCP Umashankar Dash.
Dash said the Commissionerate had already been working on a system for the last two-three months with assistance from the Special Squad which had achieved success in cracking several crimes.
“As part of the strategy, we are now utilising the expertise of the special squad. We have identified one-two officers from each police station along with 3-4 constables and the teams have been asked to investigate property cases, snatching of gold ornaments, mobile phones and other valuables,” said Dash.
Dash further said the idea is to develop expertise among the personnel so that they can easily understand the pattern of crime, identify criminals during patrolling and take necessary action.
A Special Cell ‘Property Offense Cell’ where the databases of criminals involved in various cases in the last 5 years, interrogation report, pictures of criminals and others have been stored and shared with these teams for necessary follow up action.
Already such measures have yielded results as 25 snatchers were nabbed and 30 mobile phones were seized in the last seven days by the special squad.
The Bhubaneswar DCP has also appealed people to report incidents of snatching and other crimes on dial 100 and share information about the snatchers.
“If such information including the type of vehicles and physical appearance of the miscreants involved in the crime is shared early, there is a large possibility that the miscreants can be nabbed fast. We are developing another system where crime related awareness will be created among Traffic cops and other personnel,” said Dash.
