Berhampur: Even though Odisha government has tagged Ganjam district as a ‘high-priority’ district, severe lapses in COVID-19 management have come to fore from Bhanjanagar area where a person's COVID19 test report, that revealed he was positive, was received after his cremation.

Such lapses on ground zero have raised several questions on the ongoing COVID-19 management in the district.

The deceased COVID-19 patient was a forest official from Bhanjanagar. The deceased was suffering from fever and cough and underwent a COVID test on July 12 as per doctor’s advice. Though the authorities had informed that the test report of the forest official, Basant Mohanty would come within three days, the family members alleged that they did not receive the report within the stipulated time.

Mohanty died after his condition worsened on July 21. The family members conducted the last rites as per tradition. Surprisingly, the family members were informed that Mohanty was COVID-19 positive after the conclusion of his cremation.

The family members alleged that Mohanty died as he did not receive proper treatment owing to the fact that his swab report came 10 days after the COVID-19 test.

“My father was in ICU for three days and a lot of relatives had come to meet him. After his death on July 21, we brought his body home on July 22. Over 20 persons had come to our house to pay tributes as nobody in our family was informed that my father was COVID-19 positive,” said Digant Mohanty, son of the deceased.

Digant further stated that such kind of lapses by district administration officials is certainly worrying as many people might have got infected with COVID-19.

“If such will be the working of administration then how can we fight corona. At around 7 pm yesterday, we got a phone call on my father’s number, which was registered when his swab was collected, informing us that an ambulance will be sent to pick him up,” Digant added.
