Bargarh: Block Development Officer (BDO) of Gaisilet in Bargarh district imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on a Sarpanch on Wednesday for allegedly violating Covid-19 guidelines.

BDO Niranjan Sa levied the fine on Sarpanch of Gaurenmunda panchayat Malaba Sahu for organising a congregation of around 150 villagers on the premises of the block office on Tuesday.

According to sources, the Sarapanch had gheraoed the BDO office with the help of some villagers bringing allegations of kerosene scandal.

In a letter to the Sarpanch, the BDO argued that the gherao was unlawful and an act of intimidation against the block officials. He also said that the Sarpanch had not taken any prior permission to organise the congregation.

The village head has been asked to deposit the fine in the BDO office within three days. If he fails to submit the fines, action will be initiated against him as per Covid-19 guidelines, the letter further read.
