Bhubaneswar: Intensifying its action against COVID-19 guidelines violators, the Commissionerate Police have closed down 41 shops and imposed fine on 2,833 persons in the last 24 hours in the city.

Informing the development on Twitter, Bhubaneswar DCP Umashankar Dash said, "Today 2833 people have been fined for Covid-19 Guidelines violation in UPD Bhubaneswar. Also 41 shops were sealed for not following the Covid -19 guidelines."

Similarly in Cuttack, three shops have been sealed and 1,186 people have been fined for violating COVID-19 norms.

"During special enforcement drives for implementation of #Covid19 guidelines at Cuttack city, we have booked today 1186 persons for gross violation of #SocialDistancing & 269 for not #FaceMasking in our fight to contain #COVID19. Urge people to follow Covid19 guidelines & #staysafe," the Twitter handle of DCP Cuttack said.

On September 17, the Bhubaneswar police had sealed 19 shops and fined 2,752 persons for violating the pandemic guidelines.

The move by the police came after the chief minister expressed dissatisfaction over the enforcement of COVID-19 guidelines in the police commissionerate area.

As part of efforts to strengthen enforcement activities in the two cities, Bhubaneswar has been divided into three zones and each zone will have a DCP level officer to ensure stricter enforcement of the COVID-19 guidelines.

Significantly, the government move comes in the backdrop of a decision to close down several Covid Care Centre's and Temporary Medical Centres on the grounds of lack of patients which has invited severe criticism by citizens.

Meanwhile, SCB authorities have formed a three members committee to probe the alleged mismanagement at the corona ward of the hospital after a video shared by Manas Choudhury, President of the District Congress Committee, went viral.
