Kalahandi: The “Kala” (art) in Kalahandi has found an ardent ambassador in this folk artiste Sarbeswar Bhoi who, in his early 30s, is slowly but surely drawing global attention to the soul soothing folk songs in this part of the country. His kind of music that has flavours of the soil keeps haunting long after being heard and seems dipped in the years-old folk music tradition – something rare to find in humdrum of present day modern music.
A primary school teacher by profession, Bhoi has been selected to receive the prestigious Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar by Sangeet Natak Akademi for his immense contribution to Sambalpuri music.
Most of Bhoi’s hummable numbers have an extensive use traditional Western Odisha instruments including 'Dhol,' 'Nishaan' and 'Taasha.'
I am extremely delighted to be considered for the award. This award is not for me but for the rich treasure of music and culture we have in this region. I will like to dedicate the award to my parents who have always supported me.

Bhoi shot to instant fame with his hit numbers like 'Man kaaen parphul' sung for the Sambalpuri movie 'Aadim Bichaar'. A popular name in Western Odisha, Bhoi already has a dedicated fan base across the country and abroad.
“I could not receive any formal training nor had a chance to seek professional guidance. However, its only by God’s grace that my love and passion for music has been recognized by people,” said Bhoi who hails from the Rekhpur village near Narla in the district.
