Bhubaneswar: Artificial Intelligence (AI) can prove handy in detecting COVID-19 infection through cough sound analysis. Currently a research is being undertaken in this direction by RMRC-Bhubaneswar and Norway India Partnership Initiative (NIPI), informed RMRC director Sanghamitra Pati.
Official sources said every cough has a distinct sound pattern. Similarly, cough of a Covid-19 patient will certainly have a distinct pattern, which would be different from other (influenza-like) coughs. Various analysis are on to ascertain how far the AI-based system which uses cough sounds and other contextual information will help in screening COVID-19 cases through a simple technology that can be made available in a smartphone as well.

According to Pati, NIPI has developed an App and a COVID-19 patient can record the sound of his/her cough using a smartphone. Later, the sound will be analysed, she added.
Speaking on the surge in COVID-19 cases, Pati stated that as per the existing strategy, Odisha is focusing on testing and tracing active contacts of positive cases. Due to the intensified testing and tracing, the number of positive cases detected in the State is more. The sero-survey is complete in Puri and partly in Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) area, she added.
