Bhubaneswar: Congress party on Tuesday targeted the Odisha government over the decision to hike electricity tariffs from October this year alleging that the state government has failed to provide low-cost electricity to masses.

In a press conference, senior Congress member Panchanan Kanungo slammed the government by alleging that the unit price of electricity has been increased only to hide the incompetency of the government.

According to Kanungo, the government has miserably failed to reduce the operational losses and collect the pending bills from big defaulters.

“To make up the losses on account of its own incompetency, the government has burdened the public with higher tariffs,” alleged Kanungo.

“Electricity is a basic necessity. So the government should rollback the decision as soon as possible,” added Kanungo.

He went on to target the government over its reluctance to conduct the financial audit by the CAG and energy audit by an independent agency. “The government had many a times patted its own back for being an electricity surplus state. They even boasted of selling electricity to other states. People need to know what happened to the money,” questioned Kanungo.

The Youth Congress activists also demonstrated in front of the Odisha Electricity Regulatory Authority (OERC) demanding rollback of the hike.
