Puri: In an instance of pre-poll violence, a group of BJP workers were allegedly thrashed by rival BJD workers during campaigning for the forthcoming bypoll in Pipli assembly constituency at Raigiripur village on Friday.
The village where the alleged incident took place falls under the Pipli police station.
According to reports, the incident occurred when the saffron party workers were campaigning for their candidate Ashrit Pattnayak. At Raigiripur village, BJD party workers allegedly made an ambush and smashed the bikes of the BJP party workers.
Tension gripped the area following the violence. Pattnayak along with other the party workers have staged a dharna at the village protesting against the violent activities of the ruling party workers.
"BJD goons attacked our workers and smashed their bikes while we were campaigning for the election. BJP strongly condemns this kind of violent activities by BJD. It is worthwhile to mention here that the Assembly constituency of Pipili which has been lying vacant since the demise of MLA Pradeep Maharathy last year, will go for polls on March 17, 2021.
BJD’s Rudra Pratap Maharathy and Ashrit Pattanayak of BJP have filed their nominations for the bypoll. On the other hand Congress has fielded Ajit Mangaraj as their candidate for the seat.
