Malkangiri: Three Maoists, including two carrying rewards on their heads, surrendered before the police in the district today, accusing the red rebels of exploiting the poor and tribal people.
The ultras decided to give up arms and return to social mainstream as they were fed up with violence and felt that the Maoists had deviated from their original ideology, superintendent of police Mitrabhanu Mohapatra told mediapersons here.
Two of the surrendered ultras, identified as Sina Madhi alias Dula (24) and Arun Kumar Madhi alias Era (35), carried Rs 1 lakh reward each on their head announced by the State government. The third ultra who surrendered before the SP is Irma Madkami (20), police said.
While Dula was active in Maoist activities since 2006, Era had joined the banned outfit in 2005, the SP said, adding Irma had been associated with the rebel activities since 2008.
The Naxals, who had been active in Kalimela, Padia and other areas, were involved in many criminal activities including landmine explosions, loot, murder and blasting of government buildings, Mohapatra said.
Some major crimes they were involved were the Tertala anti-landmine explosion, Rs 99 lakh loot at Chitrakonda and organizing violence during the last election, police added.
The three stated that they were disillusioned with the activities of the red rebels and felt that the ultras were exploiting and harassing the poor and tribal people instead of working for their welfare, police said.
