Bhawanipatna: In a tragic incident, a male baby elephant died after being hit by a train near Panimunda area under Biswanathpur range here during wee hours of Friday.
According to sources, the incident took place when an elephant herd was on its way to a paddy field by lumbering across a track in the area.
Alleppey-Dhanbad train ploughed into the herd causing the death of the pachyderm on the spot, the sources added.
The age of the tusker is believed to be around five years.
Notably on November 7, an elephant was wounded after being hit by a moving train on Gurudijhatia level crossing near Khuntuni in Cuttack district.
The herd of elephants was crossing the railway tracks near the level crossing while the train rammed into it, leaving one jumbo injured. The injured jumbo ran away into the forest just after the mishap and remains untraced.
