Rourkela: Five Maoists, including a woman ultra, surrendered before Rourkela Police as they were disillusioned with the activities of the red rebels, police said on Friday.
The Maoists decided to return to the mainstream as they were disillusioned by the works of the rebels and were attracted to the benefits being offered by the government, Additional Superintendent of Police, Rourkela, S K Mohanty said.
After negotiations, the ultras finally surrendered before the police yesterday, he said.
The five were identified as Jeetan Bari (24), who carried a cash reward of Rs one lakh on his head, Chamu Munda alias Arjun (27), Kanhu Bora (24) Mangu Bandra (23) and Sukimati Gagarai alias Shilpa (22), police said.
They all had joined the banned outfit under pressure from a hardcore red leader Madhu Tarkot, they said, adding, of the five naxals, only Kanhu belongs to K Balang of Odisha, a Maoist influenced area, while the rest four belonged to Jharkhand.
Mohanty said 18 maoists have surrendered before Rourkela police so far this year and this was a big achievement.
