Bhubaneswar: As many as 163 criminal cases registered against engineering students in the past three years have left the Commisionerate Police concerned. Worried over the rising rate of crime committed by students undertaking higher studies, police administration has started preparing a database of all engineering students.
Notably, engineering and management students have been found involved in many serious crimes such as murder, dacoity, theft, illegal firearms smuggling among others. In the past 6 months, police have nabbed 30 engineering students in various crimes.
According to police sources, 78 students were arrested for various crimes and 19 cases were registered last year. Similarly, more than 55 students were apprehended and 20 cases were registered in 2013.
In a bid to maintain close surveillance on these students, police have decided to create a database of students. Under this programme, the police will identify areas where the concentration of such students is high. Students who are staying in mess facilities will be under strict observation and their criminal record will be examined.
“In a bid to keep track of students from outside police is preparing a database. This database will not only be prepared for errant student but also for all as it would help the police to easily interact with them,” said deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Satyabrat Bhoi.
Speaking on the issue, academician Pritish Acharya says, “College authorities also have a role to play in curbing such behavior among students.”
Notably, the Commissionerate Police have organized various awareness programmes in as many as 10 engineering colleges to prevent students from indulging in such criminal activities.
