Bhubaneswar: The Covid-19 count is constantly on the rise, with the State reporting more than 4000 infections daily over the last few days. Odisha on Thursday recorded its highest ever single-day spike of coronavirus cases with detection of 4340 positives, taking the total infection tally to 196888.

Of the fresh cases, 2517 are from quarantine while 1823 cases are local contacts.

Khordha sees 653 cases in the last 24 hours, followed by Cuttack with 567 positives, Puri (203), Jagatsinghpur (193), Jharsuguda (174), Balasore (162), Angul (155) and Jajpur (151 cases).

During the period, the State also recorded 16 Covid-19 fatalities, making it the deadliest day so far. The virus toll has jumped to 752.

According to the Health and Family Welfare department, Khordha district has reported five deaths (including 3 in Bhubaneswar), followed by four deaths in Puri district, two in Kendrapara, and one death each in Bolangir, Mayurbhanj, Nayagarh, Rayagada and Subarnapur districts.

After today’s surge, the active cases have surged to 38818, while 157265 persons have so far recovered from the disease in Odisha.

As per official report, 50570 samples were tested on Wednesday for COVID-19 that include 8445 RT-PCR, 42024 samples via Antigen testing, and 101 samples via Truenat testing, taking the number of samples tested cumulatively across the state to 2956301.
