Bhubaneswar: Odisha received 1.3 per cent surplus rainfall this monsoon from June till date, informed the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC), Pradeep Jena on Friday.

“From the month of June till August 21, Odisha received 1.3 per cent more rainfall than the expected average rainfall. In the month of June, 9.3 per cent above normal rainfall was recorded in the State. However, there was a rainfall deficit of 34.4 per cent in July. However, in the month of August 45.2 per cent surplus rainfall has been recorded,” Jena told media.

“If we analyse the rainfall of this monsoon season till August, the rainfall condition has improved and it compensated the deficit recorded in previous months. The rainfall of August is well distributed,” he said.

He said 17 districts recorded above normal rainfall (more than 19 per cent) in the month of August till date while 12 districts received normal rainfall. Only one district recorded deficit rainfall.

Malkangiri district received 886 mm rainfall as against expected long term average of 320 mm between August 1 and 21, while for Bhadrak it was 470 mm rainfall as against the expected average of 211, for Cuttack 496 mm against 229 mm, and 479 mm against 234 mm for Dhenkanal.

Similarly, Kendrapara recorded 545 mm rainfall as against the expected 226 mm and Jajpur recorded 530 mm as against 231 mm.

“On the other hand, Nuapada received 31.9 per cent deficit rainfall. However, there is no major negative impact on farming in the district. The agriculture department is taking necessary steps,” the SRC said.
