Berhampur : Defying claims of police to present a crime-free Dussehra and take strong action against extortion, miscreants hacked a youth and his sister at Laxmi Nursingha ward under Bada Bazar police limits here in the district on Saturday.

As per sources, the duo was attacked by the assailants for refusing to pay extortion money. The siblings identified as Kalia Patra and his sister were critically injured during the attack. They have been admitted to MKCG Hospital in a critical condition.

Reports said, unidentified miscreants reached Kalia’s shop and demanded Rs, 10,000 at gunpoint . When Kalia refused, they attacked with swords and left him severely injured. When Kalia’s sister tried to rescue him, the goons also assaulted her.

“I don’t know the miscreants, who came on two bikes and asked me to give Rs 10,000 to them. When I refused, they assaulted me and my sister with swords,” said Kalia.

“They have threatened me of dire consequences if I report the matter in police and also claimed that cops don’t have guts to take any action against them,” added Kalia.
