Dhenkanal: In an inhumane incident, a man was severely thrashed by angry mob over suspicion of being a child lifter at Mina Bazar in the district on Sunday.

Upon being informed, police rushed to the spot and rescued the victim from the clutches of the angry villagers.

According to reports, the youth, name of whom was yet to be known, was moving in the village suspiciously. When asked, he didn’t say his name and address and purpose of his visit to the village. Soon, some villagers started chasing and beating him suspecting him to be a child lifter. Later he was rescued by police in a critical condition.

Some locals claimed that they saw the young man allegedly lifting a five-year-old girl from their village.

The development came at a time when children going missing in the State have created shockwaves. Following the mysterious kidnapping and murder of five-year-old girl ‘Pari’ in Nayagarh, another girl from the district had reportedly gone missing on December 12.

The three-year-old girl was last seen playing near her house at Dadhipatna village under Ranpur block in the district.

Though the parents of the girl had launched a search operation, they failed to trace her. Following the incident, a massive search operation was launched by local police and personnel of Odisha fire services department to trace the missing girl.
