Balasore: A couple died by suicide at Podadiha village under Rupsa Police limits in Balasore district allegedly due to loan burden. The deceased have been identified as Kashinath Raul and his wife Kanaklata.

As per reports, the couple had taken loan amounting to over Rs 1 lakh from private micro-financing companies. However, they were facing problems in repaying the loan after losing their sources of income following the COVID-19 lockdown.

It is alleged that the money lenders were repeatedly harassing Kashinath and his wife and pressurising them to clear the debts. Moreover, sources said that the couple was mentally disturbed as their two sons were also unemployed.

Both Kashinath and his wife Kanaklata ended their life by consuming pesticides last night.

“My father and mother had taken loans of from four to five groups. They were harassing us as we were unable to clear the debts,” said Balram Raul, deceased Kashinath’s son.

Balram’s wife said, “We had no work during lockdown and my in-laws had taken loans. The money lenders were repeatedly torturing and pressurising us to repay the loan.”

Meanwhile, police have started an investigation by registering a case of unnatural death.
