Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Government on Saturday issued a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) on the use of Favipiravir tablet for the treatment of COVID-19 patients in the State.

In a letter, Additional Chief Secretary PK Mohapatra has directed district Collectors, CDMOs, Superintendents of Medical College and Hospitals and Municipal Commissioners to ensure that Favipiravir tablet is administered in consultation with trained doctors after assessing the health condition of the concerned patient along with his/her written consent.

As a lot of COVID-19 patients are now being allowed to remain in home isolation, there is a need to ensure Favipiravir tablet availability to eligible symptomatic patients.

As per the SOP, Rapid Response Team (RRT) will be trained to assess the COVID-19 patient in home isolation whether he/she can be administered Favipiravir tablet in consultation with doctors.

The RRT will subsequently inform the patient and their relatives about the use of Favipiravir tablet, its side effects, precautions and actions to be taken after initiation of the therapy.

Similarly, RRTs have been asked to collect the consent of the patients and ensure availability of Favipiravir tablet (5 day course).

The patients will be counselled regarding any adverse reactions and in case of worsening of general condition; the RRTs will coordinate in shifting the patient to dedicated COVID Care facility.
