Bhubaneswar: The proceedings of the ongoing winter session were adjourned till 3 PM today after Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik moved condolence motion in the Odisha Assembly in honour of Sushila Devi, Governor Ganeshi Lal's wife, who passed away while undergoing treatment at a private hospital here Sunday night.

As a mark of respect to the First Lady, the assembly was adjourned by Speaker SN Patro after the ruling party MLAs, and legislators of the Opposition parties including LoP Pradipta Naik, Congress legislature party leader Narasigha Mishra and others extended support to the motion. The House then observed a two-minute silence to offer tributes to the departed soul.

"With profound grief, I would like to inform this august House about the sad demise of Sushila Devi, Honourable First Lady of the State. She was a very warm and pious person," stated CM Naveen while moving the condolence motion.

It is to be noted that Ganeshi Lal and Sushila Devi along with four other family members had tested positive for Covid-19 on November 2. All six of them were admitted to a designated Covid hospital in Bhubaneswar for treatment where she passed away yesterday. The mortal remains of Sushila Devi have been brought to Raj Bhawan from the hospital and her last rites would be performed at Swargadwar in Puri later today.

Sushila Devi was reportedly born on December 6, 1946, in Haryana.
