Umerkote: Two children were killed while four others critically injured after a pick-up van loaded with onion and groceries rammed into a roadside house at Jharabahal village under Chandahandi Block in Nabarangpur district on Monday morning.

The critically include a child who has sustained serious injuries in the accident.

As per sources, the pickup van with a cargo of potatoes, onions and other grocery items, which were loaded at Jharabahal village, was on its way to a nearby market. However, when the vehicle was nearing Jharabahal village, the driver lost control and rammed the vehicle into a house on the side of the road.

In the accident, Damurudhar Hati (60), Manisha Pandey (27) and four children -Sachin Gopal (10), Satikanta Gopal (9), Nandini Gopal (7) and Ashok Gopal (7) suffered critical injuries while they were sitting around a fire on the veranda.

All the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. However two children among them succumbed to their injuries while they were on their way to the hospital. The rest have been admitted to the Bhawanipatna hospital.

In another similar accident on October 31, seven members of a family had a narrow escape after a truck rammed into a roadside house at Mahardapalasa Chhak under Jashipur police limits in Mayurbhanj district

According to sources, the driver lost control over the heavy vehicle when it was heading to Suakathi of Keonjhar from Jharkhand along NH-220 and rammed into the house of one Gadadhar Mahanta late in the night.

The Jashipur police had rushed to the spot and seized the vehicle. A case has been registered against the driver, whose identity was not ascertained. Further investigation is underway.
