Balasore: Khantapada Police arrested two youths from Shergad toll plaza near Soro in Balasore district for allegedly impersonating as police officials, sources said on Tuesday.

As per reports, the miscreants who originally hail from Ganjam district and were staying in Baripada confessed to the crime. The duo said they wanted to join the police force and started impersonating as police officials after failing in their attempts.

Sources said, the accused who travelled in an SUV with a yellow beacon and identified themselves as officials of Special Task Force (STF) misbehaved with some cops over a road blockade on the National Highway on Monday night.

Following the ruckus, the miscreants resorted to blank firing and subsequently fled the spot in their SUV. The police officials chased and managed to nab the miscreants. The vehicle along with the firearm, ammunitions and VHF sets were seized from them.

Speaking to OTV, Paresh Kumar Rout, the Inspector In-Charge of Khantapada Police Station said, “A tomato laden truck had met with an accident on the National Highway last evening. An SUV stopped at the spot at around 8pm and the man inside it started misbehaving with the police officials deployed at the spot to clear the traffic out.”

“He and his driver identified themselves as STF officials and threatened to clear the road by firing in the air. We gave them a chase and apprehended them at the toll plaza” added Rout.

The police officer further said that the miscreants even tried to run over two of the constables deployed at the toll plaza. They escaped with minor injuries.

A probe has been launched into the matter, the police added.
