Jharsuguda: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered a probe into construction of an ash pond of Odisha Power Generation Corporation (OPGC) Limited near Hirakud reservoir in Jharsuguda district.
The Tribunal has directed a member-secretary of Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) to conduct an on- spot-investigation into the matter and initiate necessary action.
Earlier, there were allegations that the proposed ash pond was being constructed within 500 metres radius of Hirakud reservoir. Besides, it was alleged that the public hearing was not conducted for the ash pond which is mandatory under the existing norms.
The locals had opposed the proposed fly ash pond as it was located barely 48 metres away from residential area which could pose threats to their lives.
